Tooth extraction

Tooth extraction is considered the last resort in dental treatment when a tooth can no longer be preserved. Therefore, we minimize tooth extraction indications as much as possible. However, in certain special cases, removing the tooth is preferable to retaining it.

CASE REQUIRING TOOTH EXTRACTION

Simple tooth extraction, while straightforward, necessitates thorough examination and recommendation by a qualified, experienced dentist. This is because tooth extraction not only affects aesthetics and adjacent teeth but also impacts chewing function, oral health, and overall well-being. Below are common cases in which dentists typically recommend tooth extraction:

  • – Children’s deciduous teeth when reaching the age of tooth replacement.
  • – Wisdom teeth growing misaligned or impacted can cause gum damage, cavities, pain, and affect adjacent teeth.
  • – Teeth affected by severe decay, pulpitis, abscess, or significant impaction, causing instability, are no longer viable for preservation or restoration.
  • – Teeth loosened due to chronic periodontitis are irreparable.
  • – Teeth growing inverted, misaligned, or abnormally, causing dental conditions such as cavities, gum inflammation, periodontitis, misalignment of adjacent teeth, with no effective restorative options remaining.
  • – Teeth damaged, fractured, or broken due to accidents cannot be rectified by dental fillings or restorative methods but necessitate extraction for dental implantation.
  • – Crooked or supernumerary teeth require extraction to facilitate cosmetic orthodontic correction.

CASES NOT SUITABLE FOR TOOTH EXTRACTION

In cases where patients have certain medical conditions, tooth extraction may impact their health. Therefore, prior to extraction, patients need to honestly disclose their health status to the dentist to receive appropriate recommendations, ensuring absolute safety.

    • Systemic diseases: Conditions related to blood clotting issues, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, or malignancies should be clearly communicated to the dentist for appropriate control measures.
    • Local conditions: Specifically, if you are experiencing issues such as infection, contagious infection, or undergoing radiation therapy in the oral cavity, it is necessary to temporarily suspend tooth extraction for thorough treatment. Once these conditions have completely resolved, tooth extraction can be recommended.
    • Pregnant women: Pregnant women typically have a weakened immune system compared to non-pregnant individuals. Particularly, the tooth extraction process involves interventions such as anesthesia, X-rays (if applicable), and antibiotic use, which may somewhat affect the fetus. Therefore, pregnant women are temporarily contraindicated for tooth extraction.

Additionally, individuals who have recently recovered from illness or are in the menstrual period should also wait for their bodies to return to a normal state before undergoing tooth extraction.

IS TOOTH EXTRACTION PAINFUL AND DANGEROUS?

With the advancement of modern dentistry, tooth extraction, when performed at reputable dental clinics, is entirely painless and poses no risks whatsoever.

Currently, dentists perform painless tooth extractions by administering local anesthesia to patients. Skillful dentists administer anesthesia gradually, using topical or spray anesthesia on the area to be extracted, before injecting anesthesia with a needle, ensuring patients do not feel pain.

With a team of skilled dentists boasting extensive experience, coupled with state-of-the-art tooth extraction technology and a comprehensive sterile system, along with meticulous customer care, we ensure painless tooth extraction and absolute safety.

The tooth extraction procedure at DT Dental Clinic is carried out as follows:

    Bước 1:  Consultation and Examination

The doctor conducts an examination and prescribes X-rays to assess the condition of the jawbone, teeth, and surrounding tissues.

    Bước 2: Oral hygiene maintenance

The dentist performs oral hygiene procedures, eliminating factors that may impede treatment.

    Bước 3: Anesthesia

This is a fundamental step conducted in every tooth extraction procedure to ensure the highest level of control over sensations and discomfort.

    Bước 4: Performing tooth extraction

The dentist utilizes ultrasonic waves to separate the tooth from the surrounding tissues and then extracts it. The tooth extraction process at DT Dental Clinic proceeds quite expeditiously, typically taking only 15 to 30 minutes per tooth. Wisdom teeth often require more time, ranging from 20 to 45 minutes, depending on the complexity of the extraction case.

    Bước 5: Schedule a follow-up appointment

The doctor prescribes pain medication (if necessary), provides instructions for oral care during the healing process, schedules a follow-up appointment, and advises on suture removal.

PRECAUTION BEFORE, AFTER, AND POST – TOOTH EXTRACTION CARE

    Before the tooth extraction

The day before the tooth extraction, you should rest, go to bed early, and avoid stimulants such as beer, alcohol, and tobacco. Have your teeth cleaned and tartar removed to prevent infection. Clearly inform your dentist about your current health condition.

    • Inform the dentist if you are experiencing menstruation, are pregnant, or are breastfeeding.
    • Inform the dentist if you have any chronic conditions such as cardiovascular disease or diabetes.
    • Inform the dentist if you are currently experiencing fatigue, stress, or any neurological issues.
    • Inform the dentist if you are taking any medications or have any allergies.

Tooth extraction can be performed at any time of the day. However, it is best to have the extraction done in the early morning after a full meal or in the early afternoon so the dentist can monitor post-extraction bleeding more conveniently. You should remain relaxed and avoid anxiety and stress before the procedure. Patients under 18 and over 60 years old should be accompanied by a family member. If you feel anxious, dizzy, or have difficulty breathing during the extraction, inform the dentist immediately.

    After the tooth extraction

After the tooth extraction, you may experience certain symptoms: pain, bleeding, and swelling. These are entirely normal manifestations. To alleviate the discomfort following the extraction, you should undertake the following measures:

    – Alleviate pain and swelling by applying a cloth-wrapped ice pack to the cheek area where the tooth was extracted.

    – Maintain oral hygiene, gently bite on a cotton gauze pad, and hold it in place for about 30 to 45 minutes after the extraction.

    – Brush your teeth gently, avoiding the area where the tooth was recently extracted.

    – Use a straw when drinking water, and avoid consuming food that is too hot or too cold.

    – Avoid hard foods; instead, consume soft, small portions of foods that are rich in vitamins and minerals.

    – Rinse your mouth with salt water to help eliminate bacteria and cleanse the oral cavity.

    – Do not use your tongue or any sharp objects to probe the extraction site.

    – Refrain from smoking and consuming alcohol for at least three days after the extraction.
